Does it make more noise the more you rev it ?

It does sound like an alternator to be fair

I had a strange noise from down that area ( rattly at a certain rpm ) and i had to replace a tensioner, will the garage charge you to investigate further ?

My car had a squeal at low revs, it would go away after 10 mins driving.

It was the aux belt (the one attached to the alternator) which was duff & the tensioner was replaced too. Also got te cam belt done at the same time.

Don't fret, the sound is pretty loud when the tensioner is shot.

yes, and when they snap they quite often take the cambelt with them (they get tangled up) so just go careful, just before it snaps (if you let it get that far) the steering will go funny (belt to the power steering will be reduced/non exisitant) and the squeeking will get very loud) i suggest stopping rather promptly as its a sure sign that the pulley has seized.

a new one and belt shouldn't be more than £150.00 from an indi volvo garage.

To check if it's the alternator, start the car & remove the negative lead from the battery.

If it cuts out then you have a problem with the alt. I reccomend the police spec 110A replacement if it has.

Did the battery trick work?

And did you get the police spec 110A alternator?

Ok, that's different.

It may be that the pump motor is either seized, or the turbine (bit that makes the water move) may be gunged up. Over use of screen wash can sometimes do that.

Do you have headlight washers too? If so check that the hoses are all attached. If one has come off, then any fluid could just be streaming out the hose & loosing the pressure to power the jets.

The tank filler pipe can be pulled out (you need a torx driver T25 iirc to detach it from the bulkhead) then you can pull the filter (sock) and look into the tank to check for any blockage. You could check the hoses too just incase it's something blocking one of them.

On my v70 if you have the lights on sides they stay on without the key. Put them on dipped and they go out when the key comes out.
I don't know if that's relevant but thought I would mention it

Yes, I can also light my break lights with my foot on the break pedal, even without the key in the ignition.

Though I have an ex-plod so many electrical "quirks" are found in and about the systems.

It may be something that can be switched on & off with a softwear upgrade (as most bits on the cars do!).
